Summary, model-written

The Galleries originated with Marketgate built in 1972 and opened 1974; the Galleries shopping centre was completed in 1990 and opened 1991. After initial council ownership, it was sold to private interests in 1996, changed hands several times, and was repurchased by Wigan Council in 2018 before closing and being demolished in 2022. Redevelopment began in 2023, with the site under construction for a mixed‑use programme.

Why. The record does not state specific causes such as anchor tenant loss, competition, debt, or other factors leading to closure.

Where it stands. The site is currently under construction and controlled by Wigan Council, which is also the developer.
